Robinson Park
Head over to Llano for the day, but don’t forget to cool off in the Llano River at Robinson Park. Check it out — it’s a nice place to dip your toes. Take FM 152 west from the Llano Courthouse Square for two miles. For information, call the city offices at (325) 247-4158.
The Kingsland Slab
Here’s an attraction that’ll bring out swimmers and geologists alike. The Slab — formed by a massive outcropping of granite beneath the Llano River — features numerous natural swimming holes. The water moves over the granite and down into nearby Lake LBJ. Take RR 1431 west through Kingsland, then turn west on FM 3404. Follow the road for a couple of miles until you reach the Llano River. When the water is high enough, it actually flows over the road.
Sunset Point on Lake LBJ
This wonderful spot sits on the shores of Lake LBJ and offers more than just swimming, with cabins and RV spots, too. Day parks are available year-round, and the sunsets (hence the name) are a sight to behold. The park can be found at 2322 N. Wirtz Dam Road, located just off RR 1431 west of Marble Falls. Check on the Web at www.sunsetpointlbj.com. For information, call (830) 798-8199.
Devil’s Waterhole
Don’t let the name scare you. This swimming spot, located at Inks Lake State Park, is one of the state’s most popular. Formed by millions of years of water erosion over solid granite, the swimming hole features areas for swimming and guided canoe tours. Check it out for yourself. Call (512) 793-2223 for information. The park can be found on Park Road 4 several miles west of U.S. 281.
Hancock Springs
This 109-acre city-owned park in Lampasas has offered a water source for public baths for more than a century. These days, this great picnic spot features areas for swimming, an 18-hole golf course, playgrounds for the kids and walking trails. You’ll find the park on U.S. 281 just southwest of Lampasas.
Granite Beach Park
Got a hankering for giant waterslides, an aquatic trampoline, faux icebergs and water toys? Head out to one of the area’s newest attractions, Granite Beach Park on Lake LBJ. There’s plenty for the kids to do in this sheltered lake inlet while you sit back, relax, and enjoy a cocktail. Lifejackets are required, so bring your own or rent one. Take U.S. 281 south out of Marble Falls, then turn right onto FM 2147 after crossing Lake Marble Falls. Head west about six miles through Cottonwood Shores — you’ll see the sign immediately outside the city on your right. It’s located by a marina. Call (830) 693-1752 for information.
