MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls’ newest small-grocery store, La Mexicana, offers delicacies from south of the border.

Located at 1718 RR 1431, the shop — owned and operated by Tina Benitez and her son Uvaldo — carries hard-to-find Mexican products such as sodas, candies (some made from whole pieces of sweet potatoes, pumpkins and other fruits), peppers, cheeses and meat specialties including barbacoa and carnitas.

“We carry Oaxaca and Asadero cheeses, chili pasilla, cascabel (which are hard to find in the area), and we are bringing in more stuff from Mexico,” said Tina Benitez.

In addition to the food products, LaMexicana offers Mexican cosmetics, over-the-counter medicines, soaps and detergents.

Benetiz said they can also special-order piñatas and moon jumps for parties, and supply religious items for first Holy Communions, quinceañeras and other family celebrations, as well as the music. Her son is a deejay when he’s not helping his mother at the store.

“We saw there was nothing like this in Marble Falls,” said Benitez, who has lived in the area for eight years and moved from the state of Guerrero, Mexico. “We hope it will work.”

The shop is located in the Plaza West shopping center and is set back from the street. Hours are Monday-Saturday,  7 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. -7 p.m. For more, call (830) 693-6015.

Man's goal: Keeping history alive

BURNET — When "Buddy" Inman drives along U.S. 281, he's thinking about the past.

He wonders about others who have traveled the road and why and how their journeys relate to Texas history.

Inman's interest in history is one reason he joined the Sons of the Republic of Texas, a genealogical organization committed to preserving the history of the state and passing it on to the next generation of Texans.
